🛳️ U. S. Coast Guard Domestic Icebreaking – Operational Scenarios
The United States Coast Guard plays a critical role in maintaining safe and efficient navigation on the Great Lakes during winter, when waterways of the Marine Transportation System – our Nation’s maritime highways – often freeze, hindering commercial shipping traffic and creating hazards for mariners. The Coast Guard is the only federal agency authorized to conduct domestic icebreaking operations and exercises this authority through two operations on the Great Lakes. Read the full document here.
🗒️ Task Description
You are the USNIC liaison to the USCG detachment for the Great Lakes and have been asked by the USCG Commander for your predictions for ice cover for the next three days. You will use satellite-based icechart information from the USNIC for the preceding three weeks (data will be formatted as JPGgraphics, geo-referenced netCDFs, and shapefiles.); weather forecast data including surface air temperature and winds; and information on primary shipping routes. Read the full document here.
Use any part of the following data sets during this hackathon to build your project models/interfaces. Included in the Datasets are:
🧊Ice Data
💧Water Surface Temperature Date
🌨️Weather Data
Please note that within each folder, there is a README with an overview of the contents.
We can’t wait to see your project!
